About

About the Exhibition

Every woman featured in this exhibition is a serving member of South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue staff.

Each pair of portraits aims to capture two aspects of each woman’s character- their working life and their life outside of it.

For International Women’s Day, we want to celebrate the work that all women in the fire and rescue service, both in South Yorkshire and beyond, do to keep our communities safe- as well as their rich and varied lives outside of work.

All of the photographs have been taken by Orestes S Rix, a photographer who specialises in creative portraits, stunning landscapes and unusual interiors.

International Women’s Day and the fire service

Women have served within UK fire and rescue services for many years. However, women continue to be underrepresented in the workforce, both in South Yorkshire and across the country.

To be the very best at what we do, we think we need to become fully representative of the communities we serve – not just in terms of gender but race, ethnicity and sexuality too.

Part of achieving this is to celebrate the contribution of women within the fire service, in the hope that it will inspire others to consider a role within the fire and rescue service.

If you are enthusiastic about serving your local community, and working together as part of a team, register your interest in a career with us at www.syfire.gov.uk.

What is International Women’s Day?

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality and see groups come together across the world to celebrate women's achievements.

The day has been marked for well over a century, with the first official gathering held in 1911.
